Place the Keycaps! PC Controls
Complete PC control reference for Place the Keycaps! on Roblox: Q to throw keycaps, CTRL to unlock mouse, movement, camera, and sorting interactions.
Default PC Key Bindings
Place the Keycaps! on PC uses a small but important set of keyboard bindings built around sorting keycaps from a pile. The most critical action is throwing: press Q to toss a held keycap toward your cursor or target area. Throwing is faster than walking every cap to its slot manually, and it becomes essential once piles grow larger during beta sessions.
Movement follows standard Roblox WASD controls. Your character walks around the sorting area, approaches piles, and interacts with keyboard stations. Mouse look controls the camera unless your cursor is locked for gameplay. Many sorting puzzles lock the cursor so you can grab and place items precisely; Place the Keycaps! follows that pattern during active sorting.
Press CTRL to unlock your mouse when you need to move the camera freely, click UI buttons, or reposition your view around a tall keycap pile. Unlocking is temporary — you will re-engage sorting mode when you click back into the play space. Learning when to unlock versus when to stay locked is one of the first skills new players should practice.
Mouse and Interaction
Left-click typically picks up or selects keycaps depending on context. When facing a pile, clicking a cap adds it to your carry slot or hand. Some beta builds highlight the nearest cap under your crosshair; others require you to be closer. If pickup feels inconsistent, step closer and align your camera downward toward the pile center.
Right-click or alternate click may cancel a held item or drop a cap back onto a pile — exact behavior can shift during beta updates. If you mis-grab a cap, use drop or throw toward a neutral zone rather than placing it on the wrong keyboard row. Wrong-slot placement costs more time than a quick re-sort from the pile.
Scroll wheel adjusts camera zoom in most Roblox experiences, and Place the Keycaps! is no exception. Zoom out to see an entire keyboard layout while sorting; zoom in when matching similar-looking caps like Shift variants or arrow clusters. Combine zoom changes with CTRL unlock for the clearest view of cramped key rows.
Throwing with Q
The Q throw is the signature mechanic of Place the Keycaps!. After picking up a keycap, aim at the destination slot or general keyboard area and press Q. The cap travels in an arc toward your aim point. Short throws land on nearby slots; long throws help when standing at the pile edge while the keyboard is several steps away.
Throw accuracy improves with practice. Start with large keys — Enter, Space, and Shift — because their slots are easier to hit. Progress to number rows and function keys once you understand arc height and distance. Overshooting often means you threw while moving; stand still for precision placements on small caps.
Throwing also helps clear clutter when a pile overflows. Instead of stacking caps dangerously high, throw extras toward a staging zone or secondary pile if the map allows it. Read our dedicated throwing guide for advanced angles, chain throws, and beta-specific quirks.
Camera and Comfort Settings
Roblox camera sensitivity is controlled in the main Roblox settings menu, not inside Place the Keycaps! alone. Lower sensitivity helps when aligning caps on narrow keys; higher sensitivity helps when spinning quickly between pile and keyboard. Adjust before long sorting sessions to reduce wrist strain.
Fullscreen mode removes distractions from other browser tabs or the Roblox app frame. On lower-end PCs, reducing Roblox graphics quality can stabilize frame rate when dozens of keycaps physics-simulate in one pile. Stable FPS makes throwing and pickup timing more reliable.
If you play with a trackpad on a laptop, consider attaching a mouse for beta testing. Trackpads struggle with locked-cursor sorting games. Mobile players should visit the mobile controls page instead of forcing PC bindings on touch devices.
Controls During Beta
KEYBOARDS!!!!! may rebinding keys or add new actions before full release. This wiki updates when verified changes appear in patch notes or developer announcements. Always check the in-game help panel if one exists — it sometimes lists bindings not yet documented publicly.
Report broken controls constructively on the game's Roblox group or social channels if available. Specify your device, input method, and whether CTRL unlock fails after a UI popup. Beta bugs around mouse lock are common across sorting games and usually patched quickly.
